Synopsis

Fluidised bed wet granulation is one of the industrial processes used to produce urea granules with a desired size using binder materials. Besides being environmentally friendly, biodegradable binders also potentially offer cheaper processing costs, unlike commercial binders. However, the utilisation of starch-based binders for urea granules is limited. Investigations on binder properties and granulation operating conditions become crucial to utilise the starch-based binder fully. Furthermore, the particle size distribution and granulation kinetics are the important parameters to be studied to estimate the granulation performance and duration. The urea powder is granulated in a wet fluidised bed granulator using a starch-based binder (starch and urea) solution sprayed from the top of the powder bed. The effect of operating parameters on granulation performance is crucial, and the way to optimise those parameters is fully considered in this book. Besides, this book also covers the modelling works based on the kinetic theory of granular flow, which is substantial enough to estimate the optimal granulation duration in a fluidised bed. The outcomes of the book (optimum operating conditions and numerical models) potentially contribute to the scale-up process of the top spray fluidised bed wet urea granulation using a starch-based binder.
