Synopsis
Rice is a major staple food and a vital nutritional resource for more than 3.5 billion individuals globally. However, it is prone to many bacterial infections that reduce both its productivity and quality. Leaf blight disease is a common disease among Malaysian rice producers. It is often believed that bacteria Xanthomonas oryzae pv oryzae is the causative agent of this disease. The outbreak of the leaf blight disease in a few rice’s cultivated area in Peninsular Malaysia surfaced a few years ago and the infected plant have shown similar symptoms of Xanthomonas oryza pv oryzae infection. Plant pathologist has uncovered the culprit responsible for this disease, and this book is an attempt to disseminate knowledge about Pantoea, a newly discovered bacterium, that causes leaf blight of rice in Peninsular Malaysia. The conventional method of studying a plant disease has mostly focussed on the pathogen. In this book, we have effectively balanced different approaches that involve studying the pathogen, understanding the impact of the disease on certain parts of the plant, and recognising symptoms that are useful for diagnosis. The book also explores the complex genetics and physiology of the pathogen. This book aims to be a beneficial resource for individuals engaged in rice production, including those interested in research, education, or agricultural practice. Besides, this book should provide a solid starting point for understanding rice leaf blight and its impact on rice cultivation. Our goal is to enhance knowledge about rice diseases in order to promote sustainable and resilient rice farming systems globally.
