Synopsis

Banana (Musa spp.) belongs to the family Musaceae also known as Pisang in Malaysia is classified as non-seasonal fruit crop. Stunted growth of banana plant growth performance and often resulted in high mortality rate due to soil-borne disease, pests, low mineral content in the soil, and climate change are among the constraints seriously affected banana production. However, Fusarium wilt disease is considered the most limiting factor in the vegetative and reproductive stage growth of banana. The application of fungicides in banana plantation able to enhance plant resistance in controlling Fusarium wilt disease, but in the long-term excessive use of pesticides may affect the food safety, environment and soil health. Soil application with enriched silicon compounds on plating media together with gram positive bacteria significantly enhanced plant growth performance and total yield production of banana. Based on field assessment, Berangan banana treated with carbendazim together with sodium silicate compounds and Bacillus subtilis significantly increased the percentage of disease reduction by 63.05%. Therefore, integration with these elements at 15 days interval is recommended to our farmers for enhancing banana growth performance and physio-biochemical response in controlling Fusarium wilt disease.
