In this book, with the title To Have It all: Within the Changing World of Work, Economy and Society (2025), I explored the intricate balance between career ambitions with the demands of family life. This is within the context of today’s rapidly changing socio economic landscape characterised by rapidly declining birth rates world-wide [below replacement level]. Specifically, I focused on the challenges faced by modern parents, particularly career-oriented mothers, as they navigate the complexities of professional growth while trying to ensure the well-being of their families. Through insights from my own personal journey as a working mother and as a trained Sociologist, I discuss the evolving definitions of the term “To have it all”. This is combined with the changing meaning of “Success and Fulfilment”. It must be emphasised that although this book is grounded in complex social science theories and concepts, I have deliberately utilised simple, easy to understand language. This is because this book is meant for a wide audience, ranging from national planners, educationists, human resource managers and employers, academic researchers, school principals, as well as parents. In short, it is targeted to anyone in the reading public especially the aspiring career woman as well as ambitious young school-leavers who aspire ‘to have it all’. In addition, I have included practical advice for achieving a harmonious integration of career and family life while emphasizing the role of support systems, in balancing work demands with marriage and parenthood. Through placing these issues within the ambit of changing personal aspirations, societal expectations and cultural dictates pertaining to the ‘career climb’, I therefore encourage readers to redefine their own paths to success and self-fulfilment. In an attempt to strengthen my stand [as stated above] and to give it a “human face”. I have also included in this book, detailed Life-history Narratives of 20 successful Malaysian women who are good examples of ‘having it all’. I then compared their shared common traits with those of successful women in USA, China and Hong Kong, hence providing a broad sociological analysis.
