It was in May 1961 that Tunku Abdul Rahman, the Prime Minister of the Federation of Malaya, spoke vaquely of a “closer understanding” between the five territories of the Malaysian region- Malaya, Singa[ore, Sarawak, Brunei and North Borneo.
