Synopsis
We are all familiar with Single Best Answers (SBA), Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Extended Match Questions (EMQ), and True/False questions. But have you ever heard of Multiple Statement Questions (MSQ)? Likely not—because this innovative question format is still relatively new in medical education. In the traditional SBA format, a candidate is presented with a clinical statement or question followed by several answer options, from which the single best answer must be selected. MSQ takes a different approach. Instead of providing multiple answer options, each MSQ presents four related statements that are designed to lead to the same single answer. This approach is particularly useful in Surgery, where understanding a condition often requires knowledge of its clinical presentation, anatomy, investigations, complications, and principles of management. The four statements allow students to approach the same surgical diagnosis or concept from different perspectives.
